HOME cooked meals are always better as we can use quality ingredients and control the amount of sugar and salt in our food.

For the best approach, it's always wise to start with good quality organic ingredients for "cleaner", healthy, tasting meals.

Here are some recipes courtesy of Alce Nero for "cafe-quality" meals you can recreate in a healthy way at home.

BREAKFAST

Herbed Omelette

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 5 minutes

Serves: 2

Ingredients

3 eggs

2 tsp Alce Nero extra organic virgin olive oil

1 tomato, sliced into small pieces

½ tbsp chopped parsley

½ tbsp chopped basil

Sea salt and black pepper to taste

Preparation

1. In a bowl, whisk egg, salt and pepper together.

2. On a pan, drizzle olive oil and pour in the egg.

3. Before it starts to set, place tomatoes on the egg and scatter parsley and basil on top.

4. Let it cook, flip it into half and serve hot.

LUNCH

Asian Spicy Honey Shrimp

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 5 minutes

Serves: 2-3

Ingredients

12 pcs prawns, with or without shell

1 red chilli (sliced thin)

1 bird's eye chilli (chopped)

6 pcs shallots, diced

4 slices ginger

4 tbsp Alce Nero organic acacia honey

3 tbsp Alce Nero organic balsamic vinegar

3 tbsp water

3 tbsp Alce Nero organic extra virgin olive oil

2-3 tbsp corn flour

Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

1. Season prawns with salt and pepper then coat with corn flour.

2. Heat oil in a pan, pan fry prawns till 70 per cent cooked. Dish up.

3. Heat extra virgin olive oil and sauté shallots and ginger till lightly charred. Then add in chilli and bird's eye chilli, continue to stir fry for 1 minute.

4. Pour in honey, vinegar, water, salt and pepper.

5. Add in prawns and fry for 1-2 minutes till well combined.

6. Garnish with coriander and serve.

TEATIME

Jam Turnover Pastry

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 15 minutes

Serves: 6

Ingredients

Alce Nero strawberry jam

1 pack frozen pastry sheets, thawed and cut into squares (if big sheets)

½ cup milk

1 cup icing sugar (optional)

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 180c. On a baking tray, add a sheet of baking pepper.

2. Take a sheet of pastry, add 3 teaspoons of jam onto the square and fold into a triangle.

3. Carefully, press the edges down with a fork and brush the sides of the pastry with milk.

4. Bake for about 10-15 minutes until golden brown.

5. If you want, sprinkle icing sugar. Serve when cool or warm.

DINNER

Balsamic Honey Chicken

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Serves: 6

Ingredients

6 chicken drumsticks

Salt and pepper to season

2 teaspoons garlic powder to season

6 cloves garlic, crushed

1/3 cup Alce Nero organic honey

1/4 cup water (or chicken broth)

2 tbsp Alce Nero organic balsamic vinegar

1 tbsp soy sauce

Preparation

1.Season chicken with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Set aside.

2.Heat a pan or skillet over medium high heat and sear chicken drumsticks on both sides.

3.Reduce heat after searing, cover skillet with a lid and continue cooking until chicken is cooked through, while turning every 5 minutes until done.

4.Add garlic between the chicken and fry until fragrant (about 30 seconds).

5. Add honey, water, vinegar and soy sauce. Increase heat to medium-high and continue to cook until the sauce reduces down and thickens slightly.

6. Garnish with parsley and serve over vegetables, rice, pasta or with a salad.
